Amazon India empowers MSMEs with digitization, plans to enable over $80 billion in eCommerce exports by 2030

Amazon pledged a series of ambitious targets at the recently organised ‘Smbhav Summit.’ As part of the fifth edition of the annual event, summit, Amazon signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to support the government’s key priority of establishing India as a global manufacturing hub.

Amazon had taken ambitious pledges for India in 2020: digitise 10 million small businesses, create 2 million direct and indirect jobs and enable $20 billion in e-commerce exports by 2025.

“Over the last four years, we have invested significant time and effort towards the pledges we announced at the inaugural Smbhav Summit in 2020. We are humbled to share that we have hit our pledge to digitise 10 million small businesses one year ahead of time and have enabled over 12 million small businesses to become a part of the digital economy. We have enabled nearly $13 billion in cumulative exports and have created nearly 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs in India,” Samir Kumar, Country Manager, Amazon India, said at Smbhav 2024, in New Delhi today.

$80 billion in cumulative exports by 2030

At Smbhav 2024, Amazon also announced plans to enable over $80 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports from India by 2030. This is 4x more than its pledge of enabling $20 billion in e-commerce exports by 2025, reflecting the strong potential and demand for ‘Made in India’ products.

To achieve this goal, Amazon is collaborating closely with the government, lakhs of Indian small businesses and D2C brands, and other key stakeholders. The company has been working with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to leverage the Districts as Export Hubs initiative, aiming to boost MSME exports across India. This expanded export target aligns with the government’s priority to increase MSME exports. Through these efforts, Amazon demonstrates its commitment to supporting India’s small and medium businesses, helping them scale beyond borders, and playing a crucial role in the country’s economic growth and job creation.

Amazon’s job creation efforts have been particularly impactful, spanning diverse sectors including fulfilment and distribution centres, customer service, software development, human resources, program management, machine-learning data services, and seller support.

In a landmark move this September, the company became the first e-commerce platform in India to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, committing to post work opportunities on the National Career Service portal.

These initiatives align closely with the Indian government’s economic priorities, demonstrating Amazon’s commitment to supporting the growth of small and medium businesses and contributing to the country’s broader economic development.
