Green Steel Mission: Supporting MSMEs in Sustainability Initiatives & Adoption of Green Technologies

The Indian government’s Green Steel Mission is a significant step toward decarbonizing the steel industry, which is among the highest carbon-emitting sectors globally. For Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), this mission presents both opportunities and challenges.

By providing support for green technology adoption, financial incentives and policy frameworks, the Green Steel Mission aims to integrate sustainability into the core operations of MSMEs.

The Need for Green Steel in India

India is the second-largest producer of steel, and its steel industry contributes approximately 12% of the country’s total carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Given India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, transitioning to green steel—produced using renewable energy sources and lower carbon-emitting processes—is crucial.

MSMEs, which form the backbone of the Indian manufacturing sector, play a pivotal role in this transition but often face barriers such as high costs, lack of technical know-how, and limited access to financing.

Key Components of the Green Steel Mission

The Green Steel Mission encompasses several strategic measures aimed at enabling MSMEs to shift towards sustainable practices.

These include:

  1. Financial Support and Incentives: Subsidies, tax rebates and low-interest financing options for MSMEs investing in green technologies.
  2. Technology Adoption and Infrastructure Development: Encouragement of hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), and renewable energy integration.
  3. Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: Establishment of sustainability standards and mandatory carbon emission reduction targets.
  4. Research and Development (R&D) Initiatives: Government-backed research to develop cost-effective and efficient green steel production methods.
  5. Capacity Building and Skill Development: Training programs to equip MSME workforce with expertise in sustainable steel production and green technologies.

How can Indian MSMEs Benefit from the Green Steel Mission

Lowering Production Costs in the Long Run

While the initial investment in green technologies may be high, the long-term benefits include reduced energy costs and lower dependency on imported fossil fuels. Government incentives and subsidies under the Green Steel Mission will help MSMEs mitigate upfront costs.

Enhancing Market Competitiveness

Sustainability is becoming a key differentiator in global trade. Many international markets are imposing carbon tariffs and preferring environmentally friendly products. MSMEs adopting green steel practices will have a competitive edge in exports and domestic supply chains.

Access to Green Financing and Investment Opportunities

The Green Steel Mission aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals, attracting investments from domestic and international funds focused on green technologies. MSMEs leveraging these financial resources will be better positioned for growth.

Regulatory Compliance and Risk Mitigation

Stricter environmental regulations are being implemented globally. By aligning with the Green Steel Mission, MSMEs can ensure compliance with evolving policies, avoiding penalties and disruptions in operations.

Innovation and Technological Advancements

Government support for R&D and collaborations with research institutions will enable MSMEs to adopt cutting-edge technologies, making their operations more efficient and sustainable.

In spite of all the promising benefits, however, MSMEs may face hurdles such as:

  • High Initial Investment: The cost of transitioning to green steel production can be prohibitive for smaller firms.
  • Lack of Technical Expertise: Limited knowledge about sustainable practices can slow down adoption.
  • Infrastructure Limitations: Insufficient access to renewable energy sources and hydrogen-based technologies.
  • Market Uncertainty: Hesitation due to uncertain demand for green steel and price volatility.

The Green Steel Mission is a transformative initiative that holds immense potential for MSMEs. By providing financial assistance, technological support and regulatory guidance, this mission will enable MSMEs to overcome challenges and adopt sustainable steel production practices.

While there are hurdles to be addressed, with the right implementation strategies, MSMEs can play a crucial role in India’s journey toward a greener, more sustainable industry.
