India’s expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) is reshaping the country’s manufacturing landscape. Agreements with the UK, UAE and Australia are already in force, while the European Union FTA likely to be operational by Q1 2027. For manufacturers, these agreements promise reduced tariffs, improved market access and greater participation in global value chains.
Yet a growing number of exporters are discovering an important reality: FTAs may open markets, but they do not automatically open customers.
Global OEMs, distributors and procurement teams increasingly evaluate suppliers based not only on cost competitiveness and production capacity but also on their ability to comply with internationally recognized quality, environmental, safety and sustainability standards. In many sectors, certifications have become the first filter before a supplier is even considered for business.

Why Tariff Reduction Alone Is No Longer Enough

An electronics company importing products into the EU must prove compliance with hazardous substance regulations. Chemical buyers need assurance regarding product stewardship and regulatory conformity.
As supply chains become more global and regulatory oversight becomes more stringent, buyers are shifting from “Can you manufacture?” to “Can you demonstrate compliance?”
This transition is particularly relevant for Indian MSMEs seeking to benefit from the China+1 strategy, friend-shoring initiatives and global supply-chain diversification.
The Compliance Economy
Many MSMEs still perceive certifications as an administrative burden. However, leading exporters increasingly view compliance as a strategic investment.
Certifications improve process discipline, reduce operational risks, enhance customer confidence and provide access to premium markets. More importantly, they help manufacturers integrate into global OEM ecosystems where quality assurance, sustainability and traceability are non-negotiable.
For exporters, compliance is gradually becoming a market-entry requirement rather than a market differentiator.
The Rubber Industry’s Compliance Transformation
India’s rubber industry serves automotive, healthcare, engineering, infrastructure and industrial markets. As global buyers raise expectations, compliance requirements are becoming more sophisticated.

Exporters supplying rubber components to electronics and industrial sectors must also navigate REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) requirements, particularly when targeting European markets.
Increasingly, OEM supplier qualification processes also involve supplier audits, process validation, sustainability assessments and documentation reviews before contracts are awarded.
Automotive Manufacturing: Precision Meets Compliance
Few industries are as compliance intensive as automotive manufacturing.
While IATF 16949 remains the cornerstone of automotive quality management, suppliers are also expected to adopt a range of methodologies collectively known as the AIAG Core Tools.
These include APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning), which ensures quality is built into product development from the outset; PPAP (Production Part Approval Process), which validates that production processes can consistently meet customer requirements; and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), a structured approach for identifying and mitigating potential risks before they become failures.
Many global OEMs also require adherence to CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) Assessments, covering specialized processes such as heat treatment, coating, welding and moulding.
For Indian automotive component manufacturers, compliance is increasingly becoming the bridge between domestic success and global competitiveness.
Electronics Manufacturing
India’s electronics manufacturing sector is expanding rapidly under the influence of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and global supply-chain realignments.
However, access to global markets requires adherence to a complex web of standards and regulations.
IPC-A-610, widely regarded as the industry’s benchmark for electronic assembly quality, defines acceptance criteria for electronic assemblies. Many multinational buyers require suppliers to align with IPC standards before onboarding.
Products entering European markets often require CE Marking, which demonstrates conformity with EU health, safety and environmental requirements. Depending on product categories, manufacturers may also need to comply with the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive and the Low Voltage Directive (LVD).
RoHS compliance remains a critical requirement for restricting hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
A significant emerging development is the Digital Product Passport (DPP), which forms part of the European Union’s sustainability agenda. Over time, manufacturers may need to provide detailed digital records covering product composition, environmental performance, repairability and supply-chain information.
Chemical Manufacturing and the Era of Regulatory Scrutiny
The chemical industry operates under some of the most rigorous regulatory frameworks globally.
REACH remains one of the most influential regulations affecting exporters to Europe. It requires manufacturers and importers to register chemical substances and provide extensive safety information.
Complementing REACH are the GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) and the CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) Regulation, which establish standardized approaches for communicating chemical hazards.
Many leading chemical manufacturers also participate in the Responsible Care initiative, a voluntary global program focused on environmental stewardship, health and safety performance.
Another essential requirement is the preparation and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), which provide detailed information regarding hazards, handling procedures and emergency measures.
The Rise of Digital Compliance
Compliance is increasingly moving beyond documentation toward digital verification.
Supply-chain traceability is becoming a strategic requirement, particularly as buyers seek greater visibility into sourcing practices and environmental impacts.
Digital Product Passports, blockchain-enabled traceability systems and supplier-monitoring platforms are gradually transforming how compliance information is captured and shared.
At the same time, investors and regulators are demanding more robust ESG disclosures and carbon accounting practices.
Manufacturers that can digitally demonstrate compliance may enjoy faster onboarding, stronger customer trust and improved access to global markets.
How CBAM and ESPR Will Affect Indian Manufacturers
Two European regulations deserve particular attention.
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduces carbon reporting requirements for selected imported products and is expected to influence supply-chain decisions over time.
Meanwhile, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) seeks to improve product sustainability through requirements related to durability, repairability, recyclability and transparency.
Although these regulations currently impact specific sectors more directly than others, their influence is expected to expand across manufacturing value chains.
For Indian exporters, sustainability data may soon become as important as product specifications.
What Every MSME Should Do Before Entering Global Supply Chains
The most successful exporters are no longer waiting for customers to demand compliance. They are proactively investing in certifications, strengthening documentation practices, implementing traceability systems and aligning operations with international standards.
The journey should begin with understanding target market requirements, identifying certification gaps and establishing a roadmap for compliance readiness. Manufacturers should also monitor emerging developments around ESG reporting, carbon disclosures and digital product traceability.
The Road Ahead
India’s manufacturing ambitions increasingly depend on its ability to integrate into global value chains. FTAs are creating unprecedented opportunities, but market access alone is no longer sufficient.
The manufacturing competitiveness purely depends on quality, traceability, sustainability and regulatory compliance. Whether in rubber, automotive, electronics or chemical manufacturing, certifications are passport to global supply chains.
